The Gold Standard Advice Column #6

How can I deal with a situationship with a guy that is super hot and cold? One second he’s telling me he wants to date and that I am amazing, and the next he calls me suffocating?

Ooo, this is a question that I think will resonate with a lot of readers out there. In an age where a lack of commitment in relationships has become the status quo, things can quickly get confusing for both parties. First, I think it’s important to step back and think about what you want out of your relationship with this guy. It’s no secret that guys can be very confusing, but that doesn’t mean that you have to deal with it. Being clear with your intentions and letting him know how you’re feeling may help in clearing up the state of confusion that he constantly leaves you in. Many people are scared of being clear with what they’re thinking/feeling with a situationship because of the fear of being called crazy or being accused of thinking your relationship was more than it was. In reality, if you try to have an open conversation about your basic needs, and he tries to make you feel bad about it (whether you’re dating or not), it’s a clear sign that maybe you should reevaluate your future with this person. Even if you don’t want to be “official,” explaining to him how his hot-and-coldness impacts you may make him rethink the way that he treats you.

How do you dress sustainably on a budget and still look cute?

At times it can feel like every sustainable clothing company is priced way above a college kids budget. Shopping sustainably doesn’t have to mean that you buy exclusively from brands that label themselves as eco-friendly and then sell a t-shirt for $200, but instead can be as easy as being intentional with your purchases. Buying pieces that are timeless can lessen the burden that clothing waste has on the climate. It can also make it easier to justify spending a little more on an item that you’ll wear repeatedly for years - rather than just for a night out. When shopping I also try to look for sustainable  alternatives for pieces that I know I want to splurge on, and try to focus on companies that place value on evaluating the impact that their product has on our climate. I’ve found this to be a really easy thing to implement into my shopping strategies! For example, Veja’s white sneakers are made with sustainable practices and are around the same price point as many other sneaker brands.
