The Golden Standard: Advice Column #7

How can I get over anxiety related to going back to normal life after COVID-19? I want to try new things and get involved, but things that were second nature before the pandemic now cause me anxiety.

This is something that I think we can all relate to in some way. Our way of living and interacting with others changed immensely during this pandemic and adjusting to our new(est) normal is difficult. The first step to dealing with this anxiety is to acknowledge this - it’s hard!

The second thing I would suggest is journaling. Sometimes, writing out what you’re feeling helps you process and release some of that anxiety. One thing I like to do is make two lists - on one side of a piece of paper, I list out the things I’m anxious about. On the other half of the paper, I write what I can do to control each thing; if it's something I can’t control, I write that down. This helps me identify tangible steps I can take to minimize my anxiety and release that which I can’t control.

If there’s an activity you really want to try, do it! If there’s a local class or group that participates in that activity, see if a friend can accompany you for the first event. If you can’t find a friend who’s interested, think of conversation topics in advance if you’re worried about what you’ll talk about with strangers. It doesn’t have to be the best conversation you’ve had in your life. Sticking to a few simple questions can be effective without creating extra stress. And try to remember, most of us have spent the past two years with limited interaction - chances are, everyone else is slightly nervous and just as excited as you are to meet new people.

Lastly, if you find yourself really struggling to balance this anxiety, I’d highly recommend seeing a therapist (even for just a few sessions). They can help talk through your concerns and identify other coping methods to ease your worry. Just because you can deal with high levels of anxiety doesn’t mean you should - therapy can help. UMN Student Counseling Services does a great job of matching you up with a provider that matches your needs, and for non-UMN students, this website is a great place to start.
