The Fine and the Foul of Grammys Fashion 2023

Ah, February: the freezing winter weather may be gloomy, but awards season is anything but. Just two Sundays ago, the Grammys were hosted by Trevor Noah in Los Angeles, honoring music highlights from the past year. From Sam Smith’s intense, intricate performance to Beyonce’s record-breaking, most-wins-ever accomplishment, The Grammys never fail to entertain viewers. One crucial aspect of the show: the fashion. While this element is mainly showcased by E!’s Live From the Red Carpet pre-show, we must note the looks of the night. While fashion is a very subjective, nuanced and individual art, I definitely have some opinions about the outfits that were showcased: many of them high, some of them low. Let’s dive into the best and worst of Grammys’ fashion.

Golden’s Favorite Looks:

Lizzo

To kick things off with a bang, enter Lizzo. This singer, and one of the New York Times selections for the 93 most stylish people of the year, strutted the red carpet in a flamboyant neon orange, floral cloak to compliment the maxi dress. The Dolce & Gabbana playful, yet elegant, piece paired amazingly well with Lizzo’s sophisticated sass and glam; to say she slayed is an understatement.

Cardi B

Cardi B did not disappoint in her electric blue gown. This body-con fitted look hugged all the right curves and brought a futuristic and flawless style to the runway. A sculpted shoulder piece draping over her head elevated the silky dress even further.

Jack Harlow

Segway to Jack Harlow — dressed in a monochrome tan suit set. It might be a dull choice for your typical wearer, but Harlow makes it look fresh. A classy and timeless choice, Harlow did it right by spicing the style up with black leather gloves and a sparkle-knit top under his jacket. The self-confidence added an extra oomph to the look, as Harlow called himself a “snack.”

Anitta

Anitta stole the show in her strapless black, textured, voluminous Atelier Versace gown. The shockingly stunning combination of leather, lace, ruffles, and cutouts somehow does not overpower, and instead enhances the look. The Best New Artist nominee sure made her mark!

Steve Lacy

And last, but certainly not least, we have Steve Lacy. The “Bad Habit” singer, styled by Saint Laurent, slayed in his custom suit. He accessorized with a beautiful brooch, a chic black clutch, and bold pointed-toe boots to bring the look to the next level. Rolling Stone selected Lacy as the most-stylish musician of 2023 and Lacy definitely lived up to that title.

The Questionables:

Miguel

Transitioning now into the less-superb looks (in my opinion),  Miguel went a little crazy with his double Canadian tuxedo. Your eyes are not deceiving you: he wore four layers of denim, including his shoes and hat. Y2K is admittedly trending, but I think we can agree that this took jeans pretty far.

Blac Chyna

Blac Chyna served a goth, costumey, feathered bodysuit with a dismantled crow-fashioned headpiece. Chyna paired this look with an interesting choice of smudged mascara, which Rolling Stone joked was the aftermath of Chyna’s tears from seeing herself in the mirror with this outfit.

Anderson .Paak

Anderson .Paak fashioned his grandma’s sofa (?) into a suit set for this year’s Grammys. While the look was definitely unique and colorful, it was a bit old-schooled. However, he managed to pull it off, his cheerful grin making up for the outfit.

Best Dressed Couples:

MGK + Megan Fox

To end things on a high note, let’s highlight the best-dressed couples of the night—or should I say ex-couples? Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly looked amazing in their cohesive looks. Fox wore a white gown with silver bedazzled detailing waist emphasis and Kelly matched this silver with a two-piece sparkly suit. Hopefully these two patch up their relationship troubles and continue to shine on the red carpet together in the future.

Charli D’Amelio + Landon Barker

Charli D’Amelio and Landon Barker, known for their presence on Tik Tok, presented themselves in sleek all-black looks. D’Amelio intensified the staple little black dress with a voluminous peplum, while Barker styled a cutout-waist sport coat to elevate the outfit. These fresh celebrities made their mark for sure.

And that's a wrap on the Grammys 2023 fashion and award show season! We’re already excited to see what looks next year’s red carpet will bring.
