YOUR NEXT NEW HOBBY

Want to develop a hobby that incorporates beautiful scenery, great exercise, fresh air, and easygoing people? I urge you to indulge in the lifelong sport of skiing. Seriously, my Grandpa just celebrated his 81st birthday and still beats me to the chairlift every time we hit the slopes together. Living in the tundra that is Minnesota, it’s almost a crime not to try to cure your winter blues at least once. I’ve grown up skiing, and I can honestly say that some of my greatest memories have been made on the mountains with friends and family. Now I know that it can be intimidating at first, but it’s nothing a shot of Fireball can’t fix!

WHAT TO WEAR

Believe it or not, ski attire can be incredibly expressive, fun, and it’s continuously evolving. Ski culture is rooted in 80’s inspired colors and trends, but you can certainly add your own twist. The best part is that it’s based in comfort, and there are absolutely no judgements. Anything goes! Here are just a few inspirations.

IMMERSE IN THE CULTURE

Skiing is not just a sport. The ski bum culture is unlike any other with its own lingo, themed parties, unbeatable locations, and carefree energy. The beauty of it is that all are welcome! Whether you want to hike the backcountry and get first tracks or enjoy a hot chocolate in the Chalet, there is a place at the hill for everyone. When the sun sets and your muscles start to give out, just know that the festivities are far from over. Aprés ski - which translates in French to “after ski” - is when the social aspects of skiing really begin. Sometimes right at the hill, skiers from all over will come together to enjoy music, food and good company. If you’re lucky, you may even find yourself downing some liquor from the shot-ski. Here’s how you could spend your next weekend.

LOCAL RESORTS

Although it may not be the same as the Out West ski experience, there are still some great hills around the Metro Area. For the night owls: Trollhaugen hosts Late Night Friday deals for $22 lift tickets and skiing until 3 A.M. Not only that, but there’s usually live music! If you’re looking for a larger variety in terrain, definitely check out Afton. Although it’s a bit of a drive, Lutsen is by far my favorite in the state. It’s a great excuse to take a weekend trip up north with your college friends. As the experts would say, shred the gnar!
