The Impact of a Local Coffee Shop
Coffee shops serve as essential spaces for studying, meeting with friends, cozy hobbies, or grabbing a morning bite on the go.
But there is a clear distinction between a local coffee shop and a chain. So which one is better?
Starbucks and Caribou Coffee are popular coffee shop chains among University of Minnesota students. For local options, popular spots near campus include Bordertown Coffee on the East Bank and Mim’s Cafe on the St. Paul campus. These shops attract steady student traffic, making it hard to determine a clear favorite. Chain shops such as Starbucks and Caribou are often more convenient, with locations inside campus buildings and extensive menus. Local coffee shops, however, tend to offer higher-quality options along with an aesthetically pleasing environment.
If I were asked which is better — local or chain — the answer feels obvious: local all the way. But what makes a local coffee shop feel more welcoming and comforting than a chain?
Students who prefer local shops said they enjoy the atmosphere. They described local cafes as intimate and inviting thanks to intentional decor choices such as curated artwork, plants and warm lighting. Chains, by contrast, follow corporate design choices, making them feel impersonal at their best and rigid at their worst.
Students often described local coffee shops as having better “vibes.” While chains like Starbucks or Caribou might be ideal for those on the go, a local cafe offers an inviting space for visitors.
Dim lighting, comfortable seating and thoughtful decoration make longer events like studying, relaxing or meeting a friend more enjoyable.

Coffee shops are also prime examples of third spaces. A third space is a space that is neither home nor work, but instead provides comfort and connection with others. While many use coffee shops as workspaces, their value as a third space is just as important.
While chains can certainly function as third spaces, the intimate, intentionally curated atmosphere of a local shop creates a stronger sense of community and connection.
These spaces bring people together — whether through conversation or shared appreciation of the environment.
