Clothing Staples & Current Runway Trends: A Shopping Guide

A good wardrobe has a mix of classic, everyday wear and trendy pieces. Here are some wardrobe staples and their more fashion-forward alternatives to help you in your spring shopping!

  1. Denim

Staple: A straight cut jean is your best bet for a style that is comfortable and timeless. Pick a blue or black wash for the most versatility.

Trend: That said, denim and utilitarian styles have been all over the runways recently, including baggy jeans, jumpsuits, and the return of the Canadian tuxedo. Long denim skirts have especially been popular.

II. Layering Pieces

Staple: White button-up shirts are a go-to for layering during transitional weather and can dress up more casual items. Other great options are turtlenecks in neutral colors or crew neck tops.

Trend: For a more trendy option, sheer materials have been popular this spring for layering or as statements on their own. Look for mesh or gossamer fabrics to add some texture and dimension to your outfits!

III. Jackets & Outerwear

Staple: A tailored wool coat or trench coat are great, timeless options for outerwear. Trench coats are perfect for layering in early spring, while a wool coat will help you stay warm in early Minnesota winters.

Trend: For an edgier alternative, leather and biker jackets are making a comeback on the runways this season, continuing the theme of utilitarian styles. Cropped jackets are also a great option and so are blazers!

IV. Skirts

Staple: A very popular skirt length since the 60s has been mini skirts, which can be very flattering depending on the shape and silhouette.

Trend: That said, there’s been an uptick in midi- and maxi-length skirts on the runway (especially in denim!), as well as skirts with the classic ‘80s dropped hem.

V. Bags

Staple: A good tote is practical and can be a great accessory to any outfit!

Trend: Oversized totes, specifically, have been all over spring runways recently. There has also been a rise in “sculptural bags”, which have more visual interest than your average handbag.
